Part I
Chapter 1
Katerina Headley, age twenty-three, half-turned from the full-length mirror on the back of her closet door and looked over her shoulder at herself. Her gaze swept over the short, spaghetti-strap black dress that clung to her ample curves: bountiful breasts, solid hips, lush thighs. She glanced over the spill of dark brown waves that ran over her back and one shoulder, trying to school herself to look at her image admiringly instead of critically. Not bad, she told herself and did her best to believe it now that her confidence had taken a hit. It was a commonplace feminine ritual, performed just out of the shower, just into a new dress—and just out of a bad relationship.
You’re too fat. That had been her now ex-boyfriend Kevin’s last words to her when he’d hung up the phone a few days ago. That hadn’t been all; he had worked his way up to the breakup with a rambling bunch of bullshit that had probably been ten minutes long. Things about space, and growing apart, and other crap he’d probably gotten out of some stupid movie. He had finally stumbled his way to the punchline: he was leaving. And in his tiny pinhead, it was her fault—because she was the exact same size she had been when he had fallen for her, apparently.
What a joke. After Kat had given him two years of her young life, doing anything and everything he asked, he had broken up with her. Apparently, there had been Someone Else...Kat didn’t know for how long. She only knew that it was the vapidly giggly blonde with the fake boobs who waited tables at their favorite cafe, and had hit on him constantly whenever they sat in her section. She had wanted to stop sitting in that section. He had always wanted to. Big clue right there, but she had been love blind and missed it.
Maybe I should have seen this coming, she mused—and then squashed the self-blaming thought. No. I should have been able to trust that he wouldn’t be a shallow, cheating fuckboy.
Scowling with anger, Kat took her index finger and smeared away the smudge of red lipstick above her upper lip as she examined her smoky eyelids in the mirror. She kissed her full lips at the mirror, lowering her eyelids slightly, a vampy look of disdain on her face. “So, after two years of tapping this every chance you got, I’m suddenly too fat for you. Your dick was too damn small for me, but did you see me complaining?”
Of course, the asshole couldn’t hear her. And a good thing he couldn’t, because Kat wanted to rip his floppy little dick off. “Fucking prick.”
She exhaled deeply, trying to get a hold of herself. She had been consumed with rage for days, and though she had every reason to be angry about the breakup, this anger ran deeper than she had ever experienced before. When Kat tried to figure out why she was unable to put her finger on it. The anger was too deep. It felt...primal. Like something inside of her had been shaken awake by this humiliating rejection. That part of her had made her revenge fantasies go from wanting to tell him off in public to the kind of mutilations that would have landed him in the ER and her in jail.
“Get a grip, girl,” she whispered as she turned to check herself at other angles, then spritzed on a light dose of musky perfume. “He is not worth it.”
No, not at all. Taking her hands and squeezing her breasts together so that they popped up through her cleavage, she whispered to the plus-sized vixen staring back at her, “I’m sure there are plenty of men out there that would want all this.” Normally, she would be shyer, more unsure of herself, especially after being dumped. But this time, the anger made her feel stronger inside. She wanted to get back on that asshole...by finding a new lover who would make her toes curl. By making it clear that he hadn’t broken her by breaking up with her.
That’s why she was going out to the club with a couple of friends. She had arranged it within hours of his phone call; tonight, was simply the soonest that they could all get together. She saw no reason why she should sit around moping when her ex was probably fucking that thieving skank’s brains out at that very moment. He didn’t deserve to have her miss him, or cry, or wonder what had gone wrong. He had made that shit very clear.
“Tonight, I’m going to make some guy feel lucky as hell.” Slamming her makeup box shut and tossing it into the top drawer of her nightstand, Katerina headed out into the living room.
“Oh Kat!” squealed McKenzie, Kat’s younger sister, as soon as she saw Kat strutting her way into the living room. “You look totally hot!”
Kat paused in the middle of the floor to study her waif-like sibling, who was perched on the couch in short cut-off shorts with her creamy legs crossed together, a notebook at her side. Her dirty-blonde hair that was pulled up into a girly pony-tail. Despite the differences in hair color, McKenzie looked like a much smaller version of her big sis. If Kat ever lost weight and decided to bleach her hair, they could probably be mistaken for twins. Bitter word
s piled up on her tongue; she had spent too many years wishing to God that she had been born with her sister’s metabolism, and the jealousy had made her mean at times. She swallowed it back and forced a smile. “Thanks. You don’t think it’s too much?”
McKenzie uncrossed her long legs, still staring at her sister’s curves in a way that almost looked admiring. “No, seriously. Your boobs are like totally working that outfit, girl. I’m so frickin’ jealous.” Glancing down at her small breasts, McKenzie sighed. “I mean look at me, I’m flatty-go-hatti over here.”
Despite suspecting that her kid sister was flattering her, Kat felt a small surge of confidence. Her breasts were one of her best assets after all.
“I wouldn’t worry about it,” said Kat. “Your boobs fit your little frame. If you had some like mine, you would walk around like an ape and complain about back pain every second of the day.”
McKenzie let out a snort. “That’s easy for you to say jug-a-licious. All the guys at my school ogle the girls with the big ta-tas and virtually ignore the flat-chested girls like me.”
Kat scowled. Her sister was beautiful, damn it, what was wrong with those boys? “Well, the boys at your school have shit for brains then.”
McKenzie laughed. “I second that motion.” She paused. “Where are you going looking like that, anyway? Over to Kevin’s?”
Though she hated to admit it, it almost felt like she was sucker punched in the stomach by McKenzie’s question. She forced another smile and spoke matter-of-factly. “No. The bastard broke up with me.”
Her sister’s mouth dropped open with shock. “Seriously? You’ve got to be kidding...right?”
Kat shook her head. “Nope. He ran off with that waitress at Bessie’s Diner. You know, the Barbie Doll?”
“That plastic ditz who hits on everybody’s boyfriends? Talk about trading down.” She shook her head. “Damn. I can’t believe it. After all you did for that douchebag.”
Kat snorted. “Please don’t remind me. I’m trying to go have some fun so I can forget about his stupid ass.”
McKenzie’s eyebrows rose, and her eyes got a certain gleam in them. “Going to have fun where?”
Kat eyed her. You’re just filled with nosiness tonight, aren’t you? But this was part of her road to recovery, and nothing to be ashamed of. She placed her hands on her hips and proudly proclaimed, “I’m going to The Den.”
“The Den? The hottest hook-up spot in Bone City?” McKenzie let out a little squeal of delight and jumped to her feet. “Shit, I’m going too!”
Shit. “The hell you are!” snapped Kat. “You’ve got to be over twenty-one to get inside.”
“So? I have a fake I.D. I get into clubs all the time with my friends.” Her casual shrug annoyed Kat.
She rolled her eyes. “Hint, Kenzie, I’m not one of your little high school buddies. And what do you think is going to happen when you get busted and the cops find out I’m your sister and that I knew you were there, huh?”
That annoying shrug again. McKenzie could be such a kid sometimes. “Not shit.”
“Wrong. It’s not the same as if you get in by yourself and I’m not there. If I am, they can make a case that I knew you were getting in illegally and drinking underage. They’ll nail me for contributing to delinquency, and you know what? I’m not doing it.” She looked her sister in the eyes, her arms folded. “You’re not going and that’s that.”
McKenzie placed her hands on her slender hips and scowled petulantly. “Bitch.”
“Don’t start with me Kenzie,” Kat growled as she walked over to grab her leather coat off the end of the couch. “There’s nothing wrong with not wanting to take a damn fall with the cops so you can drink a few years early. Besides, you should say that with respect. I’m the one bitch you got in your life who has your best interests at heart.”
McKenzie lifted her chin stubbornly. “Then let me go.”
“Fuck off with that, I already said no.” Ugh, why does she have to pick now to act like this? She hadn’t felt like smacking her sister this much since they were both in grade school.
A heavy tread strode into the kitchen, and a huge shape filled the kitchen doorway. “Hey,” a deep, male voice growled. “You two cut it out now.”
Shouldering her coat on, Kat spun around and said, “Daddy, tell your little girl that she can’t go out and get shit-faced along with her big sister. It’s a dumb idea. We’ll get caught.”
Her father, Michael, better known as Big Mike, set down his bottle of beer on the end table next to their brown corduroy couch as he lumbered into the room. He had the same dark eyes and dark brown hair as Kat and towered over both of them. “McKenzie, kiddo, no getting your sister in trouble with the cops.” A concerned expression came over his bearded face as he studied Kat’s sexy outfit. “Where are you going, Kat?”
“Out clubbing.” She did her best not to sound defensive. She was a grown-ass woman, but she knew that to her dad she was basically still just one of his girls.
Now he looked profoundly confused. “Would Kevin approve?” he asked.
Her cheeks went hot. “Fuck Kevin!”
His face darkened. He never liked swearing in his house, especially from one of them. “Watch your tongue with me, girl. You still ain’t that big where I couldn’t bend you over my knee and spank the shit out of you.”
Kat glared at her father, so thoroughly annoyed that she felt ready to take him on. Bringing up Kevin’s approval? He might not know yet that Kevin had dumped her, but still! “I’d like to see you try.”
For once, her lumbering father was at a loss for words, his jaw dropping. Kat knew why too. She had never dared talk back to him before.
“Kat...what’s with you?” he rumbled, bewildered.
I wish I knew, she thought, but simply told him the bit she did know. “Kevin dumped me on Wednesday. I don’t want to talk about him. I’m going out tonight to forget him.”
He almost looked relieved. “Oh.” That at least was an idea he could wrap his head around. “Well, I suppose I can understand that. But enough with the swearing! Thought I raised you better than that.”
“You did,” she conceded. “I’m just that pissed off.”
Suddenly, all the windows in the house began to vibrate from loud bass music blasting outside...followed by a horn being bleated on repeatedly.
“I guess that’s my ride,” said Kat as she strutted over to the door and opened it. She looked back at the two of them and forced a smile that she feared looked more like a grimace. “See you.”
Slamming the door behind her, she walked out into the night.
“She should have taken me with her. Age restrictions are bullshit.” McKenzie sulked as the car outside pulled away and took its pounding bass with it.
“Cut that crap out, Kenzie,” Mike scolded. “You’d only get yourself in trouble trying to sneak into a nightclub in this town. Let your big sister have her night on the town without having to worry about you.”
“I know how to be discreet! Why do you always take her side?” McKenzie sulked, and he glanced at her in irritation.
“I don’t. But when she’s not losing her temper or swearin’ like a sailor, she makes a lot of sense.” His eyes went distant as he muttered, “She reminds me so much of your mother, Reba.”
The sound of her mother’s name being spoken sent a shiver of disappointment flowing through McKenzie’s limbs, and she found herself looking at the floor. Any retort she thought of caught in her throat, and she sighed. You just had to bring her up.
“Anyway,” Mike said suddenly as he grabbed up his bottle of beer and took a chug, “How about you watch some reruns of the Swamp People with your pa on this Friday night, huh?”
“I think I’m going to lie down,” said McKenzie as her dad flopped into his favorite loveseat and propped his feet up on the coffee table. “I suddenly have an awful headache.” She pressed her right palm against her head and groaned with feigned pain for good measure.
H
er father’s beard could not hide his amusement as he grabbed the remote and start flipping through channels. “Aw, I’m heartbroken. What’s wrong with Swamp People?” he teased.
“Everything,” said McKenzie as she turned to leave the room. “Have fun, though.”
“Kenzie.”
McKenzie paused and looked back. “Yes?”
Mike tipped his beer bottle at her. “Just remember it’s your daddy who loves ya.”
“I will,” she replied softly.
“I hope you feel better,” her father called after her teasingly as she walked down the hall to her room. She snorted and shook her head, waving a hand over her shoulder.
Once inside, she flipped the light switch and let out a disgusted sound at the sight of what was sitting on her bed. “Get down from there!” she hissed at Rosie, their fluffy, all-white Van cat, who was curled comfortably atop her favorite pillow. “I’m going to be pulling cat hairs out of my mouth for days because of you!”
The cat stared back at her calmly with her blue eyes for a moment before jumping off into the floor and racing past McKenzie out of the room. She heard a happy yell from her dad a moment later. “Hey, buddy! Wanna watch Swamp People? Oh no, you’re gonna wash your butt. Nobody around here respects quality television programming.”
McKenzie sighed and rolled her eyes as she pushed the door shut. She hadn’t meant to be that mean to their cat. It was just that the darned thing shed hair everywhere she went—and she preferred McKenzie’s room. It was bad enough that she would show up at school and have people making fun of her because of cat hair on her clothing.
Vowing to try to be nicer to Rosie, she rushed over to her dresser and began throwing out clothes on her bed to sample. So, her sister didn’t want to take her to the Den. Well, McKenzie knew other people who would.
Ten minutes later, she was dressed down in a body-hugging dress that looked a lot like her big sister’s minus the humongous boobs. She gave her appearance a quick check over in the bedroom mirror. Everything looked in order. Her makeup was perfect, dark and sultry. She would definitely get noticed at the club, even without the industrial-strength rack.
